Words

I was at a women’s event a few weeks ago, and the subject of the meeting was the “power of words.” The teacher likened our words to water, in that they have the power to refresh & renew, or the power to kill & destroy. Think “glass of water vs. tsunami.” What an awesome visual for a profound truth!

It’s seems to be very en vogue these days for Christian TV personalities to talk about the power of the spoken word.  About calling things into existence, or speaking blessing and favor into our lives. About the profound effect our words have on the outcome of our days, and ultimately, every event in our future. I must admit, I used to wonder how my thoughts and words really effected anything at all. I used to even get a little frustrated, thinking that people just expected to be showered with blessings after they gave their life to Christ, simply because they “called them down.” Suffering is a part of the equation, isn’t it? So, that means being miserable is apart of it too, right?

Oh man! That’s a whopper, isn’t it?!

Looking back, I can see some major errors in my theology, and perhaps many of you can relate. God spoke the world into existence, and creating everything we see and all of the unseen with His spoken Word. If you and I are made in God’s image, wouldn’t we have the ability to create or destroy with our words, both in the seen and unseen?

When we fill our hearts and minds with the truth of God’s Word, we can speak that word into every situation we face. For example…  In the midst of financial turmoil, what can we speak (out of God’s Word) that will bring His light and truth into the situation? “God is my provider.” Is this a time tested Biblical truth? Absolutely! As a believer in Him, do you have the right to claim that truth. No doubt! Standing on, speaking, and believing this truth has only one possible result – peace and assurance in the provision of God.  Here is the blessing, mingled with suffering, but never without transcendent peace. God WILL make a way.

The Christian faith is littered with paradox. Dying only to find life. Peace in the midst of tremendous suffering. And what an awesome authority God has given us, through Christ, to speak God’s words into the darkest situations in our lives and bring forth light, and ultimately, CHANGE. This goes far beyond salvation… and onto daily victory! Rising above it all. Not just knowing your eternal salvation is secure, but breaking the chains of so many strongholds on earth. It gets me excited, frankly. Every day I speak the truth of God over my life. “He knows the hairs on my head. I am more than a conqueror. I have the mind of Christ and can make wise decisions at every turn. I am the hands and feet of God.”

There are a lot of negative, negative words out there, and I guarantee that I have thought and said a bunch of them. And boy, have I felt the aftermath!  But it’s time to buck the trends (if you regurgitated the words of the media on a daily basis, it might be hard to get out of bed in the morning, no?) … speak God’s words into every aspect of your life, and just see what you are able to create and change before your very eyes.     From faith to faith, trust to trust, glory to glory… and beyond.
